The Galamus Gorge is a magical place between the departments of Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales. A narrow passage dug over the centuries by the Agly, also called the "river of eagles" and which has its source in the Pech of Bugarach. It is a beautiful natural setting, ideal for spending your holidays in the calm, sunny and picturesque charm of the Cathar country.
The Galamus Gorge is not only the ideal place to go for beautiful hikes, beautiful photos, but also activities to see the gorges up close and from a completely different angle. If you like water activities, then you can go canyoning by taking advantage of a course combining basins, pots, vertiginous walls, small slides and jumps to do or avoid according to your desires and your level of preparation. Accompanied by a professional guide, in small groups of 8 to 10 people, you can discover these superb gorges with your family, even with children from 6 years old or with friends, in complete safety. And if you like thrills, then you can continue with the Llech gorges, not very far away, in the heart of the Canigou massif. However, this more sporty course is reserved from the age of 16. If you prefer climbing or if you want to try it, then a via ferrata will make you discover the Galamus Gorge from an angle that will leave you speechless. The via ferrata which is located in Saint Paul de Fenouillet offers magnificent views of the Agly valley, but also of the Cathar castle of Quéribus and of course the famous Galamus gorges.
Located in the middle of the Cathar country, on the border between the departments of Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales, the Galamus gorges are located near the municipalities of Cubières-sur-Cinoble and Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet. You can visit the hermitage of St. Anthony of Galamus, dug on a rocky side, mentioned as early as the 15th century when the Franciscan monks transformed the cave into a chapel and built a hermitage nearby. In addition to the beauty of these gorges, you can stroll through the charming village of Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet with its gentle lifestyle, its cobbled streets, its pretty 14th century church dedicated to Saint Pierre and surmounted by a bell tower dressed with a bell tower typical of the region, made of wrought iron. Don't miss its other Chapter church with its 17th century bell tower overlooking the chapel and housing a museum dedicated to folk traditions, arts, but also archaeology and numismatics, and even minerals. The gorges are not far from Perpignan and less than ten kilometres from the castle of Peyrepertuse and other Cathar castles. So if you have a holiday to spend in the south of France, to discover the Cathar countries while combining visits with thrilling activities or land or water hikes in the middle of breathtaking landscapes, then the Galamus Gorges will certainly surprise you with their beauty.
