Périgord is the former county name of the Dordogne department. Despite its rather rural nature, Périgord has a wide cultural, historical and archaeological heritage. It is divided into 4 major natural regions: the white Périgord in the centre, known for its calcareous soils, the black Périgord in the south-east, named after the dark foliage of its forests, the purple Périgord in the south-west and its vines and the green Périgord in the north with its moors and forests. Each of these "regions" derives its name from the specificities of its composition.
Périgord is also one of the most beautiful villages in France, such as Saint-Jean-de-Côle or Baynac, to name but a few. Famous also for its rich cuisine, Périgord's reputation is well established. For those in search of history, it is the Périgord Noir that will make you happy, with the Lascaux caves and the various vestiges of the past that make it up. Being there is also an opportunity to do outdoor activities to discover the magnificent landscape of the Périgord in every way possible.
What could be better than a view from the sky to be able to observe the Périgord? Take a high ground and board a hot air balloon to fly over the Perigord countryside and its villages while enjoying a breath of fresh air. Back on land, embark on a hike accompanied by a guide, with the theme of photography. An opportunity to see Périgord in a different light while exploring the region's forests. Always in the hiking, ride a horse or let yourself be taken on board a carriage to travel at the speed of horses while enjoying the landscapes that are available to you. If you are looking for something new and want to get out of your comfort zone, try out an adventure during a survival course. You will learn to survive with as little tool as possible and without technology, to build a shelter or to recognize edible plants from those that are not. A real life experience!
In Périgord flows the 483 km long Dordogne river, from which the current name of the department takes its name. The Dordogne rises at an altitude of 1885 metres in the Massif Central, then merges with the Garonne and finally flows into the Atlantic Ocean. Sailable by canoe or kayak for a day or half-day, independently or accompanied by a guide, it is highly appreciated by visitors for the landscapes it offers when you are on the water. It is another way to admire the limestone cliffs overlooking the river, the magnificent castles with, for example, the possibility of seeing the hidden side of the castle of Montfort and the medieval cities such as the castle of Gageac, Malartrie or Castelnaud. You can also take the opportunity to observe the region's lush flora and fauna and learn more about them. From Saint-Sozy, Veyrignac, Cénac or Vayrac, you are sure to spend an unforgettable day on the water.
There are also 4 other major rivers: the Isle, the Vézère, the Auvézère and the Dronne. All four are also suitable for canoeing and offer another view of the Périgord with their troglodytic sites and authentic medieval villages.
If you are in the Périgord, do not hesitate to visit the neighbouring departments, which are also full of interesting activities. Rent a mountain bike and go and visit the landscapes around Périgord. If you are with friends, family or colleagues and you have a competitive spirit, why not go for a karting session and see who is fastest?
As you get closer to the rivers, you will find many canoeing and rafting activities for those looking for thrills. Do you want a quieter but water-related activity? Try a water hike and explore the Gartempe, for example, among many others.
Do you want to be in the height? Take to the air with a parachute jump or hot air balloon flight and take advantage of these few moments in the sky to admire the incredible view that is taking shape under your feet. If parachuting doesn't make you feel comfortable, stay close to the ground and go tree-climbing, taking the time to evolve at your own pace in the nets and spending a pleasant time with family or friends.
